Reese" <richreese@fast.net> To: "Rick Rees" <rees@absoluterealtime.com> Subject: Obit found for John Rees Date: Wed, 5 Jun 2002 18:33:30 -0400 X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2600.0000 In the course of reading through the 1913 Scranton Tribune Republican, I came across the obit for John Rees. It was published two days after his burial. There is some very good information contained therein. Scranton Tribune-Republican Saturday, April 12, 1913 DEATH OF JOHN REES (Communicated) John Rees, aged seveny-six years, of Peckville, died at his home on up- per Main street, at 9:30 o'clock Tues- day morning of this week, after a lingering illness of several years. The deceased was born in the Parish of Bettws Newyold, Monmothshire, England, in the year 1837, where he was married to Miss Sarah Steed, of the same parish, May 17, 1866. The following year they came to America on "The City of Paris" of the Inman line, ariving in New York city April 1, 1867, then coming to Olyphant, where he lived for some time. The deceased was also a resident of Win- ton for fourteen years; later taking up his home in Peckville, where he has spent the last years of his life, a respected old resident. The deceased was a man of noble character and high standing among his people. He was an honored mem- ber of the Olyphant lodge, No. 581, I. O. O. F. since the year 1869; also Colfax encampment of the same order. The funeral was held at his home Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. J. S. Thomas, of the Peckville church officiating, assisted by the members of the Odd-Fellows at the grave. He is survived by his wife, three sons and two daughters as follows: William J. of Scranton; John S. , Frank H., Mrs. John Harring and Olive U., of Peckville. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- From passenger list taken at New York port on arrival: S. S. City of Paris 1 April 1867 arrived from Liverpool 751 steerage mostly from 287 England, 268 Ireland, 110 Germany, 86 US 46 cabin including 4 from France It looks like the list is in order of groups leaving the ship. They are listed in groups by national origin which might mean that people left the ship in groups of friends that had bonded during the journey. The Rees couple appear as #61 and 62 in the steerage list: John Reese 30 male Laborer (note name misspelled) Sarah Reese 32 female Wife (note this error: she was 22) Their country of origin says something like: Gr. B Eng ? It is the only one listed like this, and the only one with a question mark. There are 7 other people listed with them from this country. The names are hard to read so they may not be right. Here are some of the names: John Reed 38 laborer Hannah Reed 35 wife Ed Rifferda 23 laborer (name unclear) Samuel Frith 80 farmer Ben Long 21 farmer John McKinnan 26 farmer Bridget McKinnan 25 wife Many of the men from Germany are listed as Miners. The Irish got off the boat last. From SF LDS film (same film, slightly better copy): James Kennedy, Master of the ship from Liverpool/Queenstown

First of all , problem with the meassage board - can't get into it! Please help, Mr.Barrett! A brother of my Great Great Grandfather, William Rees, emigrated to Pensylvania in mid 19th century. His name was probably JOHN REES, BORN 7 SEPTEMBER 1837, KEMEYS COMMANDER, MONMOUTHSHIRE. Both brothers left for USA, but William returned to Wales. Correspondence between Welsh and new American Rees' continued for some time. Letters TO America from Wales were probably written by a Sarah Rees/ Sarah Jones. SOUND FAMILIAR? please get in touch if so. PS. John's surname on his birth certificate is spelt REECE - the Anglisised version of the name.
