Sarah also kept in touch with the American side of the family. She married gentry, Thomas Jones - all class but no money, apparently! He died in 1901, from alcohol. She was only married to him for 3 years. It was not a happy marriage, and his gravestone she had inscribed, "He weakened my strength in the way he shortened my days." Ouch! She returned to Blaenavon from Llanover, after she was widowed and ran a small grocery store until her death in 1937. She had no children, but she brought up my grandfather, William Philip Rees. She was a striking woman and was very proud and well respected. During the dpression in the 30's, she apparently gave a lot of food to the poor miners in Blaenavon, who were unemployed.
